WA Truelove & Son Ltd were very pleased to once again support the Cheam and Sutton Rotary May Fair, which took place on the Spring Bank Holiday, Monday 28th May, at the Cheam Recreation Grounds.
The Cheam and Sutton Rotary May Fair first started in 1977 when it was known as the Cheam Fair. It has grown year on year over the last 41 years to be one of the largest annual local community events, with between 5,500 and 6,500 people attending the event each year. Every year there are new attractions and more stalls thanks to extensive publicity and the involvement of many community groups and charities. This year was no different, with record numbers of people enjoying a lovely afternoon in the sun.
The event is billed as an inexpensive fun afternoon for all, especially families, with adults paying just £1 to enter, and children only paying 50p. Whilst the main theme of the event is fun, at the same time the fair is held to raise money for charities. All the entrance money is therefore donated to the Cheam and Sutton Rotary Club’s chosen charity, as is the money that stallholders pay to have a stall and banner at the event. This year’s chosen charity was Sutton Mencap. Sutton Mencap is a local charity which works to improve the lives of people with a learning disability and their carers in the London Borough of Sutton. They provide play, leisure and learning opportunities both at their base in Wallington and in the wider community.
Over 50 local businesses and charities, including WA Truelove & Son Ltd, manned stalls running competitions and tombola’s and selling everything from honey to plants and handbags to cakes. We were very pleased to once again be able to join this event and to raise money for Sutton Mencap by doing so. Our Business Development Manager, Michelle O’Sullivan, manned our cake stall all day with help from several our staff, including our Director David Truelove, who turned up to support this very worthwhile cause.
We were very pleased to raise £100 from our cake stall and from our raffle, which was drawn by the Mayoress of the London Borough Sutton, Pauline Cook (pictured on the right), who is a former local headteacher. Our cake stall included a delicious cake made in the shape of the WA Truelove & Son Ltd logo, which was made by the manager of our Motspur Park branch, Julie Peacock. A photograph of the cake is shown on the right. Individual stallholders are free to do whatever they would like to with the proceeds of their stalls, but Michelle wanted to the money we raised to help make a difference to someone, so decided to donate the proceeds to The Mitcham Youth Project.
Over the course of the day we were pleased to chat to a number of people about funeral planning and pre-arranged funerals, with many people taking away brochures, including our free “Funeral Wishes” booklet. Our Funeral Plans are the perfect choice for those who wish to save their families some of the stress in having to arrange a funeral. We have a broad choice of plans available and they are all competitively priced. For more information about WA Truelove & Son Ltd and all our funeral services, please call us on
